R. Proctor was born October 28, 1842 at Mesopotamia, Trumbull county, Ohio. When a small boy he went to Cowneant, Ohio, where he lived until 1861. He was one of the first to respond to his country’s call for volunteers and enlisted in the 2nd Ohio Independent Light Artillery, where he served two years, then was discharged on account of sickness. As soon as he recovered he re-enlisted in the Navy and served on the Gunboat, U.S. Grant, until the close of the war, during his term of service taking active part in several battles of importance and the siege of Vicksburg. At the close of the war in 1865, he came to the home of his uncle, Lowell Proctor, in North Shade, Gratiot county, where he made his home for five years, during this time locating and proving up his soldier’s claim on land near Baldwin, Lake county. March 9th, 1870, he was united in marriage to Anna M. Smith. Unto them were born four children, Alman R., who died two years ago; Dana B., who now lives on the old place; Ethlyn M. Marlette of Grand Rapids and C. Victorine Dorenins, a resident of Hubbardston. With the exception of a few months on the homestead in Lake county, their entire married life was spent in North Shade, Gratiot county, on the farm known as the Haring farm and the Proctor farm, where the son now resides. After the death of his wife, which occurred Nov. 5th, 1892, he moved to Hubbardston, where he has since resided. On account of the ill health of his daughter, Mrs. Doremus, he had been staying a few weeks at the home of his son, where his death occurred, June 8th, 1914. He is survived by a sister, Mrs. Candace Press, of Comeant, Ohio, and a brother, J. E. Proctor, of Mulliken, Michigan. Mr. Proctor was a man of high character and pleasing disposition, loved and respected by all who knew him. He has been a member of O. H. Reed Post since its organization here. Comrades, Chas. Stuck, H. N. Hitchcock, Wm. Brown, C. K. Bennett, Wm. Kemp and Henry Barrowe officiating as pallbearers at his funeral. The service was conducted by Rev. Wade of Carson City, at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the home and the remains brought to their family lot in the West Side Cemetery for burial. There were beautiful floral tributes from the G.A.R., the N.R.C., and friends. Those from away who attended the services were Mr. and Mrs. Ben Marlette, of Grand Rapids, Mrs. Alman Proctor, of Chippewa Lake, Mr. and Mrs. Merton Sturges, of Chicago and Mrs. Mason Smith, of near Belding.
