She was only a few months old when her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John H. VanNess moved to this city and here her beautiful life was passed till her marriage to Mr. John H. Prout of Howard City, Oct. 9, 1889. Of peculiarly happy disposition and transparent character, delicately and tenderly reared, she was the light of the home and the joy of the social circle. She possessed rare gifts of mind and heart as well as beauty of form and feature, and carried the sweet manners of a child into the maturer years and responsibilities of womanhood and wifehood. Graduating in the schools of the city in the class of '86, she held the friends of childhood and youth pure and warm till the close of her brief life, and all that come under her influence were bound to her as by hooks of steel. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. H. Scott at the Church of Christ Sunday afternoon. The church was filled to its utmost capacity. The floral tributes were numerous and beautiful. Pink and white, the favorite colors of the deceased, were noticeable in the floral offerings and in all the designs. A large pillow of white flowers, embedded upon the back ground of pink; a floral cross standing in a solid base of flowers; several massive banks of the choicest and purest of pastures blossoms, together with many smaller designs, surrounding the casket. The casket was in perfect harmony with the surrounding tints, being covered with light pink plush, and lined with white satin. The minister spoke very earnestly upon the theme, that all losses and afflictions were designed for the good of the afflicted ones, and dwelt feelingly upon the pure life and christian character of her whom the most of the audience had known as a friend. The entire assemblage seemed to feel the loss as a personal one, and expressions of grief were heard in all parts of the crowded edifice. Some 50 carriage loads attended the burial at Highland Park, and there in her grave, bedecked with flowers, overlooking the beautiful river and many scenes of her childhood, she was laid to rest. Those that loved her so dearly and tenderly and sorrow so deeply, have the promise of a savior's presence and comfort, the memory of her pure, sweet life and the care of her cherub babe.
