Pryer, age 90, passed away on Friday, April 19, 2013. He was born on January 15, 1923 in Detroit, MI the son of Roy and Lucille (Strong) Pryer. Mr. Pryer was a member of the First Congregational Church in Portland. He enjoyed playing football, basketball and the marching band in high school. He enrolled in the R.O.T.C. program at Michigan State University and later served during WWII in the Pacific Theater. Upon his return from overseas he taught farmers in the county different farming practices. Bill returned to M.S.U. and got his Masters Degree and worked 24 years at the M.S.U. Extension in Ionia Co. where he later retired. For years he covered all aspects of the farming industry (soil) with area farmers. Being a farmer himself, he was proud of his farm which had been in the family since 1827. He was very active in 4-H within the county, and was always willing to help out area farmers. Bill was a past president of the Ionia Rotary Club, enjoyed traveling, reading and was very active at the Portland District Library. Preceding him in death were his parents, wife, Lucille Pryer; son, Jeff Hauser Pryer; sister, Margreta Rummel. Surviving are his son, W. Larry (Tricia) Pryer of Portland, daughter, Cynthia Pryer and her husband James Robertson of Montreal, Canada; grandchildren, Kelly (Todd) Rogers, James (Jennifer) Pryer, both of Portland; great grandchildren, Matt, Mike and Andrea Pryer; step- grandchildren, Lisa Foster, Bradley Rahn both of Portland and Christina (Dennis) Adamck of Buena Vista, CO.; sister-in-law, Marjorie (Jack) Wood of Dallas, Texas, and Eloise (Sherman) DeMaris of Centreville, Maryland. The Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 23, 2013 at the First Congregational Church, 421 E. Bridge Street, Portland, with the Rev. Dr. Marilyn V. Danielson, Pastor, presiding. Interment will take place at Danby Township Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at the Congregational Church Fellowship Hall. A "special thank you" to Mike and Kacie Shaw, special caregivers and Grace Hospice for the special care given to our father. Arrangements are entrusted to Lehman Funeral Homes, Portland.
