James Lawrence Purdy was born in St. Lawrence county, N.Y., January 1, 1833.  He
came to Grattan with his parents in 1849.  Soon after becoming of age he
purchased the farm where since his marriage to Charlotte Randel March 26, 1857,
he has resided till October 7, dying from consumption after two years of
sickness.  He leaves a wife, two sons, one daughter, two brothers, two sisters
and a large circle of friends and neighbors who mourn the loss of a devoted
husband, a loving father, a kind brother and an upright and honest friend and
neighbor.
