Feb. 12, 1897 Sylvester Randall was born in Ionia township, Aug. 8, 1869; died in Chicago, Feb. 2, 1897, aged 27 years, 5 months, 24 days. Almost his entire life was spent in the community where he was born. In December 1889, he was united in marriage to Clara Sissem, of Ionia, who, together with three sons, survive him. He was an active the local Christian Endeavor society and prominent in all the work of the organization as well as that of the LeValley church of which he was a member. He removed with his family Jan. 23, 1897, to Chicago, where he had secured a position, but the change in his surroundings bought on an attack of a stomach disorder, with which he had always been more or less troubled, and he was removed to the hospital where he underwent an operation, which terminated fatally. When told that he could not live, he expressed deep regret for his family, but said, “I am ready to go.” The funeral was held from the LeValley church, Saturday, the 6th inst., at 10 o’clock. “We walk by faith and not by sight,” was the passage on which Rev. Mr. Scott based a discourse filled with Christian counsel and consolation to the family, and the large congregation of friends and neighbors, who by their presence showed the high regard in which the deceased was held, and their sympathy for his bereaved ones. Thus has gone from our midst one whose daily walk was an exemplification of a strong Christian character. His brief life and sudden death emphasize the words, “Be ye also ready.” The funeral services were held at LeValley church, Saturday morning, and were largely attended. Sermon was by Rev. W.H. Scott; interment in Tuttle cemetery.
