Ranger, retired merchant and Lyons’ most prominent and highly respected citizen, died Saturday evening, following an illness of many weeks. He was 73 years old and one of the pioneers of this section. The funeral was held on Tuesday afternoon with Rev. E. O. Mather, pastor of the Lyons Methodist church, in charge. Interment was made at Belding temporarily, until the new mausoleum is completed at Ionia. When but a boy Mr. Ranger learned to rely upon himself and this fact has had much to do in shaping his subsequent career, yet indefatigable industry has perhaps been the basis of his success. He was born on September 6, 1851, in Litchfield, Medina county, Ohio. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Ranger, both parents born and reared in England. They came to America in 1847 and settled at Litchfield, Ohio. Henry Litchfield was a man of means and engaged in various business enterprises. He came to Ionia county with his son, Howard A., who was at that time six years old, and started a shoemaking shop, when shoes were all made to order. Mr. Ranger received his education in the public schools of Lyons. He learned the iron moulder’s trade in Lyons and Grand Rapids. He was janitor at the court house in Ionia for one year and about 1879 he purchased a general store at Lyons, which his deceased brother had owned. He continued to conduct the business for a period of 17 years, enjoying a large trade, in the meantime buying two farms, one of eighty acres inside the city limits of Lyons, and the other of eighty acres just west of Lyons. He had been very successful in a business way. Politically, he was a Republication and always active in his party. He was married on November 11, 1874 to Marion McCloud, who was born in Ionia, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George McCloud. Two sons and a daughter survive. Walter married Belle Dilly; Jessie is the wife of Fred Shorts, who live in Kent county; Carl is a dentist at Ithaca. Mr. Ranger was a member of Lyons lodge No. 37, Free and accepted Masons, and also of the Lyons Chapter of the Royal Arch Masons.
