THE LAST SAD RITES

Sleeping beneath a wilderness of flowers the body of F.E. Ranney yesterday was 
tenderly laid away to rest in Otisco Cemetery. Practically all the work and 
business of the community stopped during the funeral hours and a great throng 
of people from Greenville, Belding, and distant places attended the services. 
His close friends and business associates from Greenville and Belding were 
bearers and honorary bearers. Mr. Simmons of Belding sang very 
beautifully, “Nearer My God To Thee” and “Abide With Me”. Rev. S.C. Parsons, 
Mr. Ranney’s pastor and intimate friend, conducted the services. He read the 
13th Chapter of First Corinthians. He said that the finest tribute we could 
give to Mr. Ranney was to be found in deep sense of loss which burdened the 
whole community life, and that comfort might be found in memory and in hope. He 
spoke out his own personal memories of Mr. Ranney’s life; of his sane, 
practical industrious life; of his genial friendliness; of his large hearted 
generosity; and of his deeply religious nature expressed through his sturdy 
loyalty to the church. Mr. Parsons said, “The hardest fact I have to face is 
that I will never see him again in his accustomed place in the church, but his 
influence there will live to be a blessing to us.” Mr. Parsons closed his 
remarks by speaking of the eternal hopes of the soul.

Thus Greenville honored the man who had been one of her leading citizens and 
whose memory will long endure.
