Aug. 9, 1900 DEATH CLAIMED HER. Mrs. Fred Ranney Has Gone to Her Final Rest-One of God’s Noble Women Who Will Be Greatly Missed. Mrs. Fred E. Ranney’s health has been such for some weeks past, indeed we might say for some year past that news of her death should not perhaps have surprised our people very much, but as hope springs up ever in the heart, it did come with quite a shock to her large circle of relatives and friends last Thursday evening. The immediate cause of her death was brought about by a complication of heart, lung and liver trouble, the above organs all being left weak by a severe attack of “Grippe” with which she was afflicted last April. But it cannot be said that she ever knew strong, vigorous health, much to the regret of her friends. Mary Louise Ellis was born Oct. 10, 1854. Married to F.E. Ranney, Aug. 11, 1875, died Aug. 2, 1900, all of the above events taking place under the same roof, “the ole Lewis-Ellis homestead”. With the exception of about five years she lived her entire at the above home, and during that five years she lived on a part of the old farm, the house being only a block away from the home of her birth. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Ellis, celebrated as among the earliest of the white settlers in these parts. Her Father (Uncle Lew) died Jan. 14, 1896, and her mother (Aunt Louisa) only on the fifth day of last June. To Mr. and Mrs. Ranney were born four children, Ellis, Carrie, Hattie and Roy. She had one brother, Geo. W. Ellis of Philadelphia. Although never strong, she enjoyed society and friends, was unassuming in her manner and had many true and dear friends, and was especially dear to her own family whose interests she watched with loving and unceasing care; even to the last moments, her mind being clear and active. Many times the last year of her life, she realized her weakness and told her friends her time on earth was nearly ended; but her great love for her children induced her to keep cheerful while in their presence, so that when the time came, the shock was great. A home is left desolate, but the memory of her pure and sweet life will be cherished by all who knew her, and the many messages of sympathy and love, which have been send by friends show how truly and dearly she was loved. The funeral services were held from home Monday afternoon, and were attended by a large number of relatives, neighbors and friends gathered to show hits last token of their respect, honor and love. Rev. J.J. Staley, pastor of the Congregational church officiated, assisted by Rev. D.E. Millard of Portland, the latter having performed the marriage ceremony, twenty-five years ago, lacking a few days. The floral offerings were rich, beautiful and profuse, the coroner of the room in which the casket rested being simply a bower of flowers, heavily perfuming the air with their sweet and delicate odors. The pallbearers were F.A. Washburn, T.G. Ireland, E.E. Fales and W.P. Hetherington, Belding, John Lewis, Greenville and Wm. Cutler, Chicago. The interment was in the family lot in the Otisco cemetery. While we deeply mourn her loss, we will still be thankful that we had her love so many years; and that our lives will be made better by reasons of such memories is the prayer of husband and children. Among those here from outside to attend the funeral of Mrs. Ranney, Monday were her brother and wife, Mr. and Mrs. Geo. W. Ellis of Philadelphia, (Mrs. Ellis has been her continuously since Mrs. Ranney’s return from Philadelphia.) Miss Jessie Ellis of Detroit, Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Cutler and Stephen Long of Chicago, and a large number from Greenville and the territory adjacent to the city. Additional Comments: Mrs. Fred E.
