Ransom, an old resident of Grand Rapids and Ionia county, who has lived in the house at 414 Front street for nearly 30 years, died yesterday at the age of 78 after a prolonged illness from paralysis contracted some 12 years ago. Mr. Ransom has been an invalid for many years and confined to his bed about three months. David P. Ransom was born May 7, 1830 at Brockett’s Bridge, now Dolgeville, Herkimer county, New York. He was educated at the public schools and academy in Little Falls, N.Y., and in 1868 he came to Michigan, settling on a farm in Ionia county. Here he lived for several years, when he went to Saranac and afterwards came to Grand Rapids and built the little home on North Front street on the bank of the river. On coming here Mr. Ransom first engaged in the grocery business, but was interested at different times in various trades and occupations. He was for some time circulation manager of The Herald in its early days. He was for two terms a member of the board of education, from 1884 to 1888, and when the now burned Turner street school was erected Mr. Ransom was instrumental in having 12 rooms built into it instead of but eight, as was planned. Mr. Ransom is survived by his wife and two children, Fred B. Ransom of Racine, Wis., and Miss Clara Ransom, a teacher in the public schools of Grand Rapids. The funeral services will be held at the residence at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Interment at Saranac.
