Rodney Cohn Raterink passed away unexpectedly Friday, Jan. 8, 2010 at the age 
of 68. 

He was born in Grand Rapids Aug. 17, 1941. Rodney was a faithful Christian, 
husband, father and grandfather. He graduated in 1959 from South Christian High 
School in Cutlerville, and served in the US Army from 1963-1967. In 1999 he 
retired from Electronic Data Systems to take care of his wife as her MS 
advanced. He became involved in volunteer prison ministry and found his calling 
reaching out to men in need of support and savior. He earned a Bachelor of 
Religious Education became an ordained minister and served as a Chaplain with 
the Ionia County Jails and Prisons.

He is survived by wife, Phyllis; children, Gerritt (Kerry) Raterink, Pamela 
(Brian) Caruthers and Dorene (Mike) Culp; grandchildren, Nathanael, Stephanie, 
and their mother, Leslie, Amanda, Tyler and Joseph; mother, Jeannette Raterink; 
mother-in-law, Mildred Nikula; siblings, Claude Kooistra, Ben (Martha) 
Raterink, Lee (Maryellen) Raterink, Judy (Tracy) Allen and Patty (Greg) Merwin.

Funeral Services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at the Matthysse-Kuiper-
DeGraaf Funeral Chapel (Kentwood) 466 Kalamazoo Ave. SE. Interment in Chapel 
Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will received relatives and friends Tuesday 2-
4 and 7-9 p.m. and Wednesday 10-11 a.m. Donations may be made in lieu of 
flowers to Forgotten Man Ministries (forgottenman.org). Condolences may be sent
