Ionia Sentinel-Standard - Tues. June 26, 1975


IONIA - William Henry Rathrun, 70 of McKendry Road, rural Ionia, suffered a 
fatal heart attack while unloading a boat at Dickson Lake in Montcalm County 
Monday afternoon.

He was born in Albion, Nov. 19, 1908 the son of Asa and Grace (Johnston) 
Rathburn.

He attended schools first in Montana, then in Ionia.

He worked as a metal finisher for General Motors at plants in Lansing, Flint 
and Pontiac.

During World War II, he served with the navy in the Pacific area of operations. 
Following his discharge from the service, he started farming on his farm on 
McKendry Road.

He was married to Beatrice Rowley in Ionia on April 30, 1934. They have made 
their home on their Ionia farm since that time. 

Surviving Mr. Rathburn, besides his wife, are three daughters, Marilyn Grueber 
of Traverse City; Karen Gasper of Belding; and Connie Laux of Williamsville, 
N.Y.; eight grandchildren; and three brothers, Clayton of Saranac; Clinton of 
Wellston, and Forest of Hudson, Ind.’ one sister, Thelma Haskins of Long Lake, 
rural Orleans.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 2 p.m. from the Leddick Funeral Home with 
the Rev. Nolan Williams of the Zion United Methodist Church officiating.

Interment will be in Easton Cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home to receive friends and relatives Tuesday 
from 7 to 9 p.m. and Wednesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m.

Memorial funds have been established for the Multiple Sclerosis Society and the 
Michigan Heart Fund and American Cancer Society. Contributions may be left at 
the funeral home.
