Shirley was born in Detroit on January 3, 1928 to Otto and Ollive Gallandt. Shirley was the apple of her father’s eye. She attended Albion College, majoring in music and education. At Albion, Shirley met her husband, Paul Reed, when they were set up on a blind date. Shirley and Paul married on June 12, 1948, and after her graduation, Shirley taught kindergarten in Albion. Upon Paul’s graduation, they moved to Paul’s hometown of Lake Odessa, where Shirley “started her own kindergarten” by raising six children, five boys and a girl. After many years in Lake Odessa, the Reeds moved with their younger children to Fresno, CA, and for a brief period of time, Atlanta, GA. Shirley and Paul ultimately retired to Green Valley, AZ. After Paul’s death, Shirley returned to the Grand Rapids area to be near her children. Shirley’s greatest love was her family, and she was content to be around her children and their spouses, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She dearly loved music, reading, movies, friends, and being around babies, even if not her own. Shirley was predeceased by her husband, Paul Reed; and her brother, Fred Gallandt. Shirley is survived by her children, Paul, Jr., Scott (Dianne), Christopher (Beth), James (Pam), Sally Meggs (Scott) and Clark (DeeDee); her grandchildren, Erica, Frank, Michelle Monastra, Kelly Dalman (Doug), Holly, Mitchell, Chaz, Parker, Alec, Kevin, Kyle, Andrew, Ashley, and Caitlin; her great grandchildren, Neil, Owen, Dominic, and Angelo. She is also survived by many beloved nieces and nephews, and in her later years was especially close to her nieces, Jan Reed-Smith and Ginny Kruisenga. Shirley and her family were blessed to have the period of her last illness spent at Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods, where Shirley was not only very comfortable, but where she made many dear friends among the employees and staff. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Faith Hospice at Trillium Woods in Shirley’s name. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at the Koops Funeral Chapel in Lake Odessa. There will be a time of visitation for one hour prior to the service. Burial will be in Lakeside Cemetery in Lake Odessa.
