R. Hospital Ed. Reeves, age 59, lifelong resident of Otisco, died Thursday evening at 7 o’clock at Blodgett hospital in Grand Rapids where he had been taken two weeks ago after a period of poor health. A week ago he underwent major surgery. Death was attributed to cancer. The body was removed to the family home between Cook’s Corners and Smyrna on Friday where it reposed until the final rites Sunday afternoon. The son of Walter L. and Charlotte Reeves, Edward J. Reeves was born in Otisco and lived there all his life. On December 28, 1907 he was married to Miss Katie Hubbard of Cook’s Corners, and to the couple four children were born – Dorothy, now Mrs. Robert Noddins of Orleans; Milan and Howard of Smyrna and Marion, at home. Through all the years of his life Mr. Reeves was most active in rural and community affairs. At the time of his death he was township supervisor, a director of the Smyrna school board, president of the Otisco Cemetery Association, vice president and a member of the board of directors of the Belding Co-Operative Association, a member of the Friendship club, the West Otisco Farmers’ club, the Gleaners and an attendant of the Church of God. Surviving besides the widow and the four children are four grandchildren, Loran and Clara Noddins, Russell and Paul Reeves, and six brothers: John and Ben of Orleans, Harry of Nebraska, Robt. of Detroit, Harland of Los Angeles, California, and George of Ionia. Funeral services were conducted at the Fales funeral home Sunday afternoon at 2:30 and the profusion of beautiful flowers and the 300 persons attending the rites bore testimony of the passing of a highly respected citizen and a well-liked friend. Miss Doris Earl of Smyrna saying “Someday He’ll Make It Plain to Me” and “Someday We’ll Understand,” accompanied by Mrs. W.F. Lane. Rev. Lane of the Church of God was the officiating clergyman, and burial was made in Otisco cemetery. Active pallbearers were Fred Dumon, Laurence Gardner, B.J. Storey, Henry Zahm, Earl Nash and Herb Ross.
