P. Culver. Mrs. Rice recovered from the attack, which was thought to have been heart trouble, and was about again. A few days ago she had another attack, however, and this one proved fatal, she having passed away on Saturday morning last, old age and congestions of the lungs being given as the cause of death. Mrs. Rice was born at Union, Maine, upward of 84 years ago. For a number of years she had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Lyon, in Chicago, having gone there from Ludington, Mich., after her husband’s death a number of years ago, but visiting her daughter here during nearly every summer. All her children – Mrs. Culver, Mrs. Lyon, and Mrs. Goodrich of Reed City were here at the time of her death, but none were in the room at the time, she having passed away suddenly when none but the nurse, Miss Mable Morehouse of Grand Rapids, who had been attending her but a few days, was present. Deceased was a kindly old lady, loved by all who knew her, and up to a short time ago had been remarkably smart for one of her extreme age. Short funeral services were conducted from the home of Mrs. Culver Sunday forenoon, after which the remains were taken by special train to Ludington, where services were held Monday and burial made by the side of her husband. Revs. Carlisle and Millard attended the services here. The special train was made almost a necessity, as it is impossible to reach Ludington from Portland until late at night any other way without remaining over night on the road, and this the family objected to doing. The remains were accompanied by the daughters who were already here, beside members of Mr. Lyon’s family, who came here from Chicago Saturday night, and being joined at Ludington by members of Mrs. Goodrich’s family.
