Rice, briefly mentioned in last week’s issue, removed from the community one of its oldest residents, and a man who had spent all but the last four years of his lifetime of 87 years in the township of Danby. He was born opposite the present site of the Danby cemetery, on Mulliken Road, and resided in that vicinity until moving to the farm near Frost corners, where he resided until going to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Roy Dravenstatt, in Eagle township, to reside. Mr. Rice was born in May, 1858, and in 1884 married Miss Ella Jeffers, whose death occurred 17 years ago. One daughter, Mrs. Roy Dravenstatt, of Eagle township, survives. Funeral services for Mr. Rice were held Saturday afternoon at Bandfield chapel, and burial was in Danby township cemetery, within a few rods of the place of his birth. Rev. George Kard, of Eagle, officiated and bearers were Richard Selden, Ed Rose, Albert Cook, Will Howe, Anthony Wohlscheid, John Hudson. Mr. Rice for years was a keen student of nature, and was able to forecast weather conditions with accuracy. He based his predictions upon facts he had learned from his nature study. He was also interested and active in school matters. While still a resident of the Danby cemetery neighborhood he served on the board of the Compton school, and later for many years served in a like capacity in the Frost school district, making a total of more than 50 years of service in the two districts. He also served as township health officer for nearly 40 years. Among those who came from a distance to attend the services were Mrs. Edith Dawson, Mr. and Mrs. D. R. Lazelle, Pontiac; Mr. and Mrs. B. W. Wright and Miss Lottie Wright, Mrs. Glenn Robinson, Lansing; Mrs. George Goward and Miss Nellie Brown, Ionia; Mrs. Edward Jones, Mr. and Mrs. Harlow Reed and daughter and Mrs. Lulu Pankhurst, of Grand Ledge; Mrs. Ida Dravenstatt and daughter Mrs. G. R. Mitchell, of Dearborn. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/mi/ionia/obits/r/rice16010nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/mifiles/ File size: 2.5 Kb
