March 5, 2009 Harley David Rice, age 77, of Belding, passed away on Wednesday, March 4, 2009, at Metron of Belding following a long illness. He was born on June 27, 1931 in Saranac to William Bert and Maise (Fisher) Rice. He attended Belding Schools and served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War. Following his return from the service he married Helen M. Crankshaw on Jan. 23, 1957 at Helen’s parents’ home in Belding, and she survives. Harley worked as a machine operator for nearly 20 years at Vitech in Belding, retiring nearly 10 years ago. Harley was a member of Belding Wesleyan Methodist Church and was an avid hunter in his youth. In addition to his wife, Harley’s family of survivors include his son Robert (Nora) Rice of Hubbardston; 3 grandchildren, Rachel (Jeff) Bliss of Little Rock, Ark., Dixie (Chad) Wing of Fenwick and Trenton (Marci) Stobert of Muir; great-grandchildren, Brody, Marissa, Mitchell and Lillian; a nephew, David Rice, of Belding; and many dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Mary Owens, Daisy Rice and Gracie Rice and 2 brothers, L.D. Rice and John Rice. Services will take place on Saturday, March 7 at Verdun Family Funeral Home, 303 S. Bridge Street, Belding. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. and the funeral will begin at noon, with Harley’s good friend, Reverend Richard Shindorf of the Belding Wesleyan Methodist Church officiating. Interment will take place at Tuttle Cemetery when weather permits. Those considering an expression of sympathy are welcomed to consider a contribution to a Veteran’s charity of the Donor’s choice.
