April 4, 1946 Oscar S. Rice Dies Suddenly at Home Here Oscar S. Rice, 59, a lifelong resident of this village, died suddenly at his home on James Street early Saturday morning from a heart attack. He had been in his usual health the day previous. At about 4:30 a.m. he complained of a severe pain in his chest and Mrs. Rice summoned Dr. Fox. Later he seemed somewhat improved, but suddenly expired. Mr. Rice was born in Portland, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles C. Rice. He attended school here and later was associated with his father in a grocery business on Kent Street. Later Mr. and Mrs. Rice operated the Temple Theatre, which was located in the building now occupied by Smith Hardware Co., and Mr. Rice also continued his father’s insurance and real estate business. They later moved the theatre to the present location and renames it the Sylvan. The present owners, Mr. and Mrs. John Kortes, bought the business and changed the name to the Sun. For the past nine years Mr. Rice had been an auditor for the Michigan State Accident Fund, having worked most of the time in the eastern part of the state. Mr. Rice was married on September 30, 1907, to Miss Sara McCormick, who survives, as does the mother, Mrs. Jennie Rice, and one brother, Floyd C. Rice Sr., of Portland. There are also five nephews, Floyd Rice, Jr., Portland; Gerald Fineis, on Luzon with the Army, and Erwin Fineis, of Ionia; Dean McCormick, Painesville, Ohip; Allen McCormick, Dayton, Ohio; one niece, Mrs. Lucille Ridenour, of Portland. Funeral services were held Monday at Portland Congregational Church, Rev. W.H. Skentlebury, of Chelsea, a former Portland minister, officiated. Burial was in Portland Cemetery. Portland Masonic Lodge, of which Mr. Rice was a member, had charge of services at the grave. Pallbearers were Roy W. Dawdy, Laben Smith, Dr. B.E. Lowry, Oliver Tschopp, of Portland, and George I. Francis and Charles Lockwood, of Jackson. Honorary bearers were John Kortes, Leo C. Lehman, Harold W. Buck, of Portland, and Joseph Bappert, William Bishop and Roes Miller, of Lansing. The church was filled with friends and relatives at time of the funeral service, and the many beautiful floral pieces showed the high esteem in which Mr. Rice was held by all who knew him. Among those who came from out of town to attend the funeral were Mrs. Hulda Fineis, Mrs. Dorothy Fineis, Lowell; Mr. and Mrs. E.P. Fineis, Ionia; Mr. and Mrs. A. J. McCormick, Canton, Ohio; Allen McCormick, Dayton, Ohio; Dean McCormick, Painesville, Ohio; Mrs. Anna Dixon, Lansing; Mr. and Mrs. Otto Posorek, Detroit; and friends from Lowell, Ionia, Charlotte, Lansing, Jackson and Detroit.
