Calvin M. Rice, who died at his home in this city on Thursday evening would have been 81 years old had he lived until May 14 next, and if he had lived until June, 1886, he would have been in Ionia just 50 years. Mr. Rice was born in Conway, Franklin county, Mass., May 14, 1805. He was married in Conway to Aurelia Walker, and in 1836 emigrated to Michigan, his family consisting of his wife and five small children. They were 14 days coming from Detroit to Ionia with a yoke of oxen drawing their household effects. He located his land at the U.S. land office, it being situated in the township of Easton and just across the line. On this land the old Rice homestead was built which still stands, and in which deceased lived till the day of his death. The growth of the city however encroached on his farm, and a large portion of it was laid out in lots forming what is sometimes called “Riceville” in the second ward. The consequent rise in the value of his land made him well-off, and he has lived for many years in comfort without the need of work. He was twice married, the second time to Mrs. Thomas at his native place in Massachusetts. Neither of his wives survives him. The five children who came with him through the wilderness to Ionia were Alvin, Alfred, Harvey, Alonzo and Aurelia (Mrs. John Fleming). Five were born here viz: William, George, Ellen (Mrs. E.E. Burritt), Addison and Fidelia (Mrs. David Jennings). Only five of the ten children are living: Alfred, Harvey, Alonzo, Mrs. Fleming and Mrs. Jennings. Mr. Rice was a most exemplary citizen and neighbor, always held in high respect and esteem during the entire of the half century that he has been a familiar figure in this community. His domestic life was happy and his children regarded him with more than ordinary filial affection. His health for some time has been poor and he has passed away because he had served out his time. He died full of years, leaving for his friends the recollection of a tranquil, well-spent and useful life.
