Ionia Sentinel - Thursday, Aug. 22, 1889

Alfred Rice, son of the late Calvin M. Rice, died suddenly Sunday morning. 
He was in Conway, Mass., and removed here in June, 1836, with his parents. 
During his 59 years he has enjoyed uninterrupted good health and his death 
was a surprise to all who knew him.

Mr. Rice married a daughter of the late Wm. C. Clark, and after her death he 
married Miss Pauline Williams, of Grand Rapids, in which city he lived for 
several years, returning to this city about 10 years ago. His daughter, 
Nellie, Mrs. Chas. Ketcham of Girard, Kan., formerly of Easton, and his son, 
Charles, eight years old, who has made his home with Alonzo Rice since the 
death of his mother, are the surviving children of the two marriages. 

Two brothers, Alonzo Rice of Ionia, township and Harvey W. Rice of Stanton, 
and two sisters, Mrs. John Fleming of Stanton and Mrs. David Jennings of 
Sturgis, are the surviving members of the family of the late Calvin M. Rice.  
The family was one of the first to settle here, and its members have been 
useful and esteemed citizens. 

The funeral was attended yesterday afternoon from the residence of Mrs Wm. 
Rice, the bearers being his brother, Alonzo Rice and Harvey Rice, and Wally 
Rice and Mr. Cutler, his nephew.
