DEATH OF JOHN W. RICE

At the Age of 48 Following a Second Stroke of Paralysis

John W. Rice, aged 43, died this morning at the family home on State street, 
where he had been critically ill for three weeks following a stroke of 
paralysis.

The funeral will be attended from the home at 1:30 Thursday afternoon and at 
the Church of Christ at 2 o'clock. Interment in Highland Park cemetery.

Mr. Rice was born in Ionia, a son of the late William Rice. He married Miss 
Belle Steadman, who with one son, William, survives, also one brother, Harry 
Rice. The Rice home has been on State street most of the time since their 
marriage, except for a period when they were on the farm and at the home of 
his mother. For a number of years Mr. Rice was identified with the Michigan 
National guard, a member of the old company G. He suffered a stroke of 
paralysis six years ago and regained fairly good health until the second 
stroke three weeks ago. HIs early demise is cause for regret among many 
friends of the family.

The funeral for the late John Rice was largely attended this afternoon from 
the residence on Rice street. It was under the auspices of the Elks and the 
impressive ceremony of that lodge was duly carried out. About forty members of 
the lodge went to the home and preceded the cortege to the church. The 
pallbearers were selected from the Elks.
