William Rice was born at Ionia on March 14, 1839. He was a son of Calvin T. Rice, one of the pioneers of Ionia, who survives him. He lived with his parents until he reached the age of 21, when he went to California, remaining there two years. He returned to Ionia in 1862, and in November of that year he married Jane, daughter of Simon Welch. His domestic life was of the happiest. His wife and two sons survive him. Mr. Rice has been for so many years so familiar a figure on our streets that he will be sadly missed. For the past 14 years he has had an office with N. S. Hitchcock. He was a man of strictest integrity and because of that was frequently called upon to fill positions of trust in the administration of estates and as fiduciary officer in various societies. At the time of his death and for several years previous he held the office of treasurer of the Ionia agricultural society. His death will be a particularly severe loss to that society. He was a democrat in politics and always an active worker, though would never accept an important nomination. He was willing and anxious to work in the ranks, the success of his party being the only reward he coveted. But notwithstanding his active and vigorous political work, he had the respect of all parties, and his death will be keenly felt by men of all parties and of all ranks on society. The funeral was held on Monday afternoon from the house, Elder R. S. Groves officiating. The remains were interred at the new cemetery at Prairie Creek.
