Rice died at Muir Friday evening, May 24, in the eighty-second year of his age. His death came as the termination of a long illness, which confined him to his bed during the last month. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock standard time from the residence of H. C. Clough. Rev. W. K. Spencer will officiate. Interment will be beside his wife who died several years ago, in the Muir cemetery. Mr. Rice was a prominent figure in Ionia county for the past 40 years or more. Coming here from Allegan County, he first purchased the Cornell farm in Ionia township, which he afterward sold to James Martin. He then purchased two other farms near Muir, but as he became more incapacitated by age he sold them, and the remainder of his life was spent in Muir. At one time he was sheriff of Allegan County as the successor of Sheriff Cook, father of Henry Cook the present sheriff of Ionia county. There are two children, Hercules Rice, postmaster and storekeeper at Muir, and Mrs. Laura Whitbeck, of Fennville, Allegan County.
