Coroner Dale Kauffman, Undersheriff Herman Smith and state police said the victim was identified as Mayford Richardson, 68, Clarksville cemetery sexton. An autopsy performed by Dr. Charles Black of Lansing, state pathologist, at 10 o’clock Sunday evening revealed Richardson died of a severe skull fracture within three to five minutes following the first impact. The death on Grand River avenue or old US16 occurred about 5:30 Sunday evening one mile east of the Kent county line. Officers investigating the fatal crash said Richardson had just left a truck stop at the intersection of Hastings road and old 16 where he had eaten his evening meal. The truck stop is located on the north side of the pavement and Richardson apparently drove his pickup truck onto Hastings road. Officers said he then proceeded south into the intersection where it collided with an automobile driven west by Roy Rinard, 17, of Lowell. Coroner Kauffman said Richardson was lying about in the center of the pavement when he was struck by a westbound pickup truck driven by Roland Peacock, 30, of Alto. Peacock informed Coroner Kauffman he was blinded by headlights of an automobile parked on the side of the highway and he failed to see the man lying in the roadway. Officers said investigation of the fatality is continuing. Richardson who resided at 218 Broad street in Clarksville, was a retired mail carrier and was employed by Beattie funeral home in Clarksville, now Pickens funeral home. He was a veteran of World War I and past member of the American Legion. Funeral service will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Clarksville Bible church. The Rev. Donald Mathis will officiate and interment will be at Clarksville cemetery. The body will be at Pickens funeral chapel in Clarksville until noon Wednesday when it will be removed to the church.
