She started from the home west of Front street where they have resided for the past year, shortly after noon to go over to Hiram Minier’s and return a hat she had used to wear to the dedication services, in leaving the house she told Mr. Rickard to lay down and rest until she came back which would be very soon. It was necessary to cross the railroad track and she took a short cut by a path which leads onto the track and thence to the crossing. The stub train from Lowell came backing in and the tender struck her, knocking her down and crushing her right limb badly and also bruising her about the head, neck and shoulders. The train was stopped as quickly as possible and people in the vicinity hurried to the scene to render assistance to the unfortunate woman, it was near Chas. Hammond’s house and he with others picked her up tenderly and carried her home on an improvised stretcher. Physicians were at once summoned and Drs. Litle, Ferguson, Pinkham and Stanton responded to the call, but it was found on examination that it would be impossible for her to live and she passed away without graining consciousness. Mrs. Rickard was 73 years old and a devoted member of the M. E. church. She attended the dedication Sunday feeling very happy and joyous over the event, she was also one of the oldest members of the Rebekahs and as fine an old lady as anyone would wish to meet. She and Mr. Rickard who is very feeble and whose grief over her death is pitiful in the extreme have resided here about thirty years. She was faithful and loyal to her church and also to the fraternity and was always ready to give assistance in any way she could. She leaves a husband and two daughters, Mrs. Eugene Edmonds and Mrs. Tina Wright of this city. Warren Shepard saw her danger and called to her to look out for the cars but he says she either did not hear him or became dazed and did not realize her peril. The funeral was held at the church this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock attended by a large number of her many friends and the order of which she was a member, Rev. J. W. Sheehas officiating.
