Rhea F. (Smith) Ries, of Lakeland, Fla., a former Ionia resident, died Dec. 9,
1998, at the age of 78.  she was born in St. Johns on Jan. 31, 1920, and lived
in Lakeland the last ten years.  Rhea was a clerical manager for the United
States government, a member of the Order of the Eastern Star #79, and the First
Congregational Church of St. Johns.  Rhea married Donald L. Smith and he
preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Dennis Smith of Lewiston and Tom Smith of Daytona
Beach, Fla.; three step-daughters, Jan Carpenter of Kalamazoo, Judy Baur of
Grand Rapids, and Christ Smith of Charlotte; nine grandchildren; two
great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lila Simcox of Mount Pleasant.

Memorial services will be 11 a.m., Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at the First
Congregational Church in St. Johns.  Burial will be in Eureka Cemetery, with
Rev. Matt Olson officiating.  Memorials may be made to Muscular Dystrophy. 
Arrangements are by the Osgood Funeral Home.
