Feb. 26, 1880 Death of a Pioneer Died at his residence in this township Feb. 21 after a severe illness of one week, Mr. J. Riker aged 78 years. Mr. Riker was born in N.J. in 1802. When thirty years of age he removed with his family to the state of New York and settled in Stuben County. Here he remained until 1839 when he removed to Michigan and located in this township on the county line north of this village where he has ever since resided. He was among the very first settlers of the township, and at the time of his death had resided more years in the town than any other living person except his surviving companion. Soon after his settlement here, he became a member of the Congregational Church at Ionia, and continued his membership with that church until the time of his death. He was a worthy citizen, and his memory should be cherished as one of those sturdy pioneers who entered Grand River Valley at an early day, and by persevering industry made for himself a home. On Sunday, Feb. 15th he had a stroke of paralysis a few days later the erysipalas set in and he suffered intensely until the time of his death. His funeral took place at the residence on Monday, and was attended by a large concourse of neighbors. Sermon by the editor.
