April 19, 1906 Another Pioneer Called Mrs. John Riker, one of the pioneers of this section died at her home in the First ward, last Saturday afternoon, after a protracted illness of consumption. Malissa Brink was born in Otisco Township, Ionia County, Mich., on June 3, 1844 and was married to John Riker on Dec. 21, 1__2, who survived her. Four children were born to this union, three of whom are now living, Bert, Jennie, and James, all of whom were at her bedside at the time of her death. Deceased always proved to be an affectionate wife, a fond mother and a true neighbor and friend, and was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew her. Funeral services were held at the house on Tuesday, at 10:00 a.m. conducted by Rev. H.N. Spear. Interment in the Otisco cemetery. Deceased was a member of the local longe of the Degree of Honor, and carried $1,000 insurance, the members of the lodge attending the funeral in a body. Card of Thanks We desire to tender our heart-felt thanks to the members of the Degree of Honor and to the many neighbors and friends who lent a helping hand in the care and assistance of our beloved wife and mother, during her long illness, and especially do we thank the members of the Baptist church, and others, for their beautiful floral offerings, and we also wish to thank those who furnished music at the funeral. John Riker James Riker Jennie Riker Mr. and Mrs. Bert Riker Belding Banner – Thurs. April 19, 1906 Gone to her Rest. Last Saturday afternoon at 3:10 after an illness of about eighteen months, Mrs. John Riker passed to her rest, having reached the age of 61 years and 10 months. Mrs. Riker was born in this city near the present site of the Catholic church and has always lived in this city and vicinity. Three children, James, Jennie and Bert Riker, and the aged husband are left to mourn the loss of a kind wife and mother. The funeral was held at her home on Tuesday morning at 10 o’clock, Rev. H.N. Spear speaking words of comfort to the sorrowing ones and the remains were taken to Otisco for interment. Mrs. Riker was a member of the Degree of Honor and carried $1000 insurance in that order. A number of the members of the lodge attended the funeral and accompanied the remains to their last resting place.
