Portland Observer, 27 Mar 1889

Last week the Observer made a brief mention of the death of Charles Riker, 
being unable to obtain any facts in regard to it.  Mr. Riker died at his home 
in Grand Rapids on Monday, the 18th, of pneumonia, being sick but a week.  He 
was for 11 years a resident of Portland township and at the time of his death 
was 45 years of age.  He leaves a wife (the daughter of Levi Shotwell of this 
township) and one child – a daughter.  The body was brought here for burial on 
Thursday last, services being held at the Methodist church by the Rev. 
Hallenbeck.  Mr. Riker had many friends in and about Portland, and they unite 
with the Observer in extending to the bereaved wife and family, their heartfelt 
sympathy in their affliction.
