He was born Nov. 8, 1931, in Ionia County the son of John and Louise (Rockey) Riley. Leonard was a 1949 graduate of St. John the Baptist Catholic High School and went on to serve his country in the United States Army stationed in Germany during the Korean War from July 18, 1952, until his honorable discharge on June 17, 1954. He was married to Gloria J. Hoffman on Sept. 1, 1995, in St. Johns. Leonard worked 31 years for Michigan Bell and AT&T before retiring in 1985. Leonard was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston. He was a longtime member of the Communications Workers of America, Hubbardston American Legion, Trout Unlimited and Pheasants Forever. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed hunting and fishing. Leonard was a committed environmentalist planting hundreds of trees in his lifetime. He felt obligated to take care of the streams and forests he loved. His loving spirit was evident when sharing a story or a cold beverage at deer camp or at the kitchen table of dear friends. Leonard loved reading and discussing good books. Sitting in his rocking chair, taking long drives in the country (with no particular destination) and spending time with friends and family brought him joy. He found pleasure in the simple things in life and had a gift of seeing the good in everyone. Leonard enjoyed top-shelf whiskey and good conversation. Leonard is survived by his children, Kevin (Pamela Allard) Riley of Grand Rapids, Annette Riley of Lansing, Mark (Charlene) Riley of Portland, OR, Randy (Lori Cunningham) Riley of East Lansing, eight grandchildren, Jennifer Churchill, Aaron Churchill, Rhandi Nelson, Blake Riley, Maggie Riley, Owen Riley, Sam Riley, Madeline Riley; three great-grandchildren, Lucas Nelson, Charlotte Churchill and Weston Gilmore, brothers and sisters, Loraine Barker, Helen Tait, Rita Snyder, Janet (Pat) Burns, Gene (Audrey) Riley and best friend, Mary Satterlee. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Gloria; brothers and sisters, Betty Geller, John “Jack” Riley Jr., Joe Riley and Patricia Schafer. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, April 22, 2015, at 11 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with Fr. Tom Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be held on Monday, April 20, 2015, from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Hubbardston with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary.
