Arthur Rivett, 43, Muir funeral director and store owner-operator, died at 3:30 a.m. Saturday at Butterworth hospital. His sudden death came about 12 hours after emergency surgery had been performed. Contributing to his fatal illness was a heart condition which followed the surgery. He had been ill about 2 ½ weeks. He had been a patient in Clinton County Memorial hospital at St. Johns for two weeks and was removed to his home last weekend. He was admitted to the Grand Rapids hospital Tuesday afternoon. Born in London, England July 7, 1912, a heritage of which he had always been proud, Rivett came to Ionia as a small chlid with his parents and three brothers. His three brothers died suddenly of heart ailments in recent years. His father, who died many years ago, was employed in Ionia as a railroader. Mrs. Rivett died several years ago. He attended the Ionia public schools and was graduated from Ionia high school in 1931. During his high school education he was employed at Hilers store as a salesman and for a number of years after continued there. He was married December 31, 1939 to Mary Jeanne Shaw, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Shaw of Muir. Several years later he became associated with Mr. Shaw and after experience in the Shaw store at Muir and assisting in funeral work, entered Wayne University College of Mortuary Science from which he was a graduated. He became associated with his father-in-law in the business which became known as Shaw-Rivett. During World War II he was inducted into the Army and served through the action in New Guinea where he contracted malaria with which he had been afflicted since. Upon his return from service his Muir business was enlarged until the furniture store became one of the largest in a village of Muir’s size in the state. Active in many organizations he was a member of Lyons Lodge No. 37, F&AM., De Witt Clinton Consistory, 32nd Degree, Ancient Accepted Scottish Rite; Lyons Chapter 60 R.A.M., Loyal Order of Moose of Ionia, Girard Horrocks Post 37, American Legion of Ionia; member Lyons-Muir Lions club of which he was a past president; Saladin Temple of Grand Rapids, Peninsular club of Grand Rapids. In activities of the village he had been closely identified with the government of the community. He had served on the village board of trustees and as village clerk for 14 years, and at the time of his death was general chairman of the Muir Centennial committee. An ardent golfer he belonged to the Ionia Country club for many years and served as its president in 1943. He was a member of the Fourth District Funeral Director’s association of Michigan. He was active in the affairs of his church, St. Johns Episcopal church of Ionia, and for many years had served on its board of vestery. Surviving are his wife Mary Jeanne and son John; an uncle Arthur Rivett of MacTier, Ont.; and a nephew Robert Rivett of Greenville. Funeral services are to be held at the St. Johns Episcopal church of Ionia at 11 a.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Fr. Roger J. Bunday officiating. Interment will be at Oakwood cemetery at Muir.
