The funeral of Hiram Roberts was held Sunday at the Methodist church being 
conducted by Rev. J.R. Bowen, assisted by J.S. Preston.  The singing was by 
Messrs. Henderson and Herrick, Mrs. Henderson and Miss Tubbs.  The G.A.R. post 
and W.R.C. attended in a body, both contributing beautiful flowers.  The 
pallbearers were Messrs. Gleason, Thayer, Sherwood and Howe.  Interment in 
Lyons cemetery.

The following obituary was read by Mr. Bowen:

Hiram Roberts was a native of N.Y. state, born at Canajoharie, Montgomery Co., 
August 14, 1825, and died in Ionia township November 13, 1903, at the ripe old 
age of 78 years 3 months.

For want of opportunity in obtaining data of his early life we can only mention 
that on July 22, 1850, at the age of 25 years, he was united in marriage to 
Catherine Scrambling, the latter dying in 1876.  Six years later, Mr. Roberts 
was again married, this time to Mrs. A. Kreible, October 22, 1882, who survives 
him.  

Comrade Roberts was a veteran of the great civil war, and saw service at the 
front as private in Co. K. 142nd New York volunteer infantry.  He leaves, as a 
much prized relic to his children, an honorable discharge.

For the past 18 years our deceased comrade has been an honored member of M.W. 
Dresser Post of Lyons.  He never joined the church but always took much 
interest in church matters.

There were in the family 9 children, 4 of whom survive him: Mrs. Joseph Dennie, 
of Grand Haven, Mrs. Frank White, Fenwick, Oldson Roberts, Deer Creek 
Minnesota, and Hiram J., of Kasota, Minn.

The comrade came to Lyons soon after close of war and has ever been recognized 
as among its honorable residents.
