Roberts, 55, of Portland, received fatal injuries and her husband, Clarence, 61, was seriously injured when their car skidded on an icy pavement at Fruitport and struck a street Saturday night. Mrs. Roberts, mother of 10 children, died en route to a Muskegon hospital. According to Coroner Basil A. Young, she died of chest injuries. Mr. Roberts, whose condition was reported as fair this week, suffered fractured ribs, shock and face lacerations. He was taken to Hackley Hospital, Muskegon. Officers said the Roberts’ automobile skidded about 160 feet on the ice, left US16 and hit a tree along the road. Mr. Roberts was returned home Monday from the hospital in the Neller ambulance. Funeral services for Mrs. Roberts were held Wednesday afternoon at Neller Funeral Home, Rev. Keith Avery officiating. Burial will be Memphis, Mo. Friday and there will be services there at that time. Survivors besides the husband are four daughters, Mrs. Margaret Harshman, of Sullivan, Ill.; Mrs. Martha Lamphere, of Mason; Mrs. Marian Parr, of Whitehall, whom Mr. and Mrs. Roberts were on their way to see at the time of the accident; and Rhesa, of Portland; six sons, Clarence Edward Roberts, Jr., of Portland; Marcus, of Lake Odessa; James, in the navy at Jacksonville, Fla.; Jerry, in the Air Force at Las Vegas, Nev.; Terry and Timothy, both of Portland. There are 13 grandchildren. A brother, Hugh McIntyre, resides at Newkirk, Okla., and there are two sisters, Mrs. Mollie Moffitt, of Keosauqua, Iowa and Mrs. Gertrude Drain, of Winfield, Kansas. Mrs. Roberts was a member of Blue Star mothers. Mr. and Mrs. Roberts had operated the cafeteria at Portland Manufacturing Co. until the plant closed last fall.
