R. Smith and Mrs. Smith, Amos Welch and wife, Mrs. Eliza Welch and Mrs. John H. Hamilton went to Grand Rapids this morning, where a funeral service over the remains of James R. Roberts was conducted today. The body was brought to Ionia this afternoon for interment, with the ritual service of the G.A.R. at the grave. The bearers were comrades of the Grand Army. Ionia Standard – Fri. Feb. 12, 1909 James R. Roberts died at the Soldiers home, Grand Rapids, last week. He was a son of the late Mrs. John B. Welch, by her first husband, and therefore a half- brother to Amos Welch, Darius Welch, Mrs. K.R. Smith and Mrs. J. H. Hamilton. He was a lieutenant in the 21st Mich. Infantry Vo’s and later a captain in the 10th Mich. cavalry. Soon after the war he moved to Kansas, where he leaves a wife and ten children. His age was about 72. The funeral will take place at Grand Rapids, where a sister, Mrs. Remington resides. Interment will be in the Highland Park, Ionia, where his father and mother and only full brother, and where he had expressed the wish to have his last resting place.
