The Citizens Telephone Manager at Ionia Killed on a Pole. H.G. Roberts, manager of the Citizens’ Telephone Co. at Ionia, was instantly killed by coming in contact with a live electric wire, last Friday afternoon. He had been doing some repairing on the line, and started to go to the ground, when it is supposed his foot or leg came in contact with a wire upon which the insulation had lost its effectiveness. His hands and the climbers which he wore held him to the pole for a few seconds, but he soon dropped to the ground and struck squarely upon his feet. A young man named Martin, who was working with Roberts on the line, in trying to assist him, says he received a shock through Roberts’ body. It has been stated, also, that Roberts was killed by the fall instead of by the wire, as witnesses state that he was alive after he struck the walk. Mr. Roberts was married about a year ago to Miss Phebe Price of Greenville and leaves a wife but no children. He had been examined and accepted for $1,000 insurance in the Royal Arcanum, but his policy had not been issued. He also carried $2,000 in the Ancient Order and $1,000 in the Buffaloes, the latter of which had been in force but 48 hours when he was killed.
