(Doc) Robinson, Lake Odessa’s long-time veterinarian, died Friday, Dec. 2 at Blodgett Medical Center in Grand Rapids at age 71. During his 44 years in the village, he was always on the go treating diseases and injuries of large and small animals at his tiny village office located behind his home on Third Ave. or making calls at barns at area farms. He was born June 16, 1912 near Bad Axe, the son of Alex and Eliza (Caraveau) Robinson. He graduated from Bad Axe High School in 1931 and from Michigan State University in 1936 with his doctorate in veterinary medicine. Doc Robinson had worked his way through college as a full-time bellhop who handled other duties for a salary of $50 a month plus room and board. He told a reporter, last summer, that when he graduated, he didn’t owe anyone anything but he didn’t have anything either. He married the former Gurtha Herbert in 1937. She preceded him in death in 1956. He then married Helen Goodemoot Livermore in Lake Odessa in 1968. After his graduation, he assisted a veterinarian in Cadillac for a short time, then conducted TB tests on cattle for the state from 1937 to 1939. He also headed the federal Bangs disease program, supervising 14 other veterinarians. He began his practice in Lake Odessa in 1939, after purchasing the practice from Dr. C.C. Petty who asked him to come to the community. He was active in many community organizations. He was a member of the Lions Club, a past member of the Masons and a supervisor of the Lake Odessa Fair in the 1940’s. He served for 26 years on the Board of directors of the Lake Odessa Union Bank. Last summer, he was named to the tenth grand marshal of the parade for the Lake Odessa Fair. Surviving are his wife, Helen; one daughter, Mrs. David (Sandy) Bain of Joliet, Ill.; three grandsons, Craig, Eric and Kevin Bain; three step-sons, Michael Livermore of Freeport and Tom and Scott Livermore of Lake Odessa; three step-daughters, Mrs. Larry (Sara Jo) Cobb and Mrs. Patrick (Mary) James of Lake Odessa and Mrs. Don (Robin) Ainsworth of Rockerford; and ten step-grandchildren. Funeral services were held Monday, Dec. 5 at 1:30 p.m. at Pickens-Koops Funeral Chapel with Rev. Stephen Keller and Rev. Paul Robinson officiating. Burial was in Lakeside Cemetery, Lake Odessa. Memorial contributions may be made to the Central United Methodist Church in Lake Odessa.
