Robinson, 64, of Ionia died at his residence Sunday afternoon. Born in Grand Rapids on March 10, 1920, he was the son of Orin and Mabel Van Houghten Robinson. He graduated from Ionia High School in the Class of 1940 and joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in February 1942 and was assigned to a bomber squadron at Tuscon, Ariz. The Flying Fortress heavy bomber of which he was a crew member was shot down over Kiel, Germany, June 13, 1943, and he was taken prisoner and remained a prisoner of war until liberated by elements of General George S. Patton’s Third Amy in May 1945. After his discharge he returned to Ionia and with his brother Roger opened Robinson’s Restaurant. He was employed at the Ionia State Hospital beginning in September 1948, and later by Riverside Correctional Facility, until he retired in March 1980 for reasons of health. He was married in Ionia February 14, 1947 to the former Patricia Ann Griffin. She survives. He was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Saranac Post of the American Legion and the Sheridan Post of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Surviving in addition to his wife are: a son, John W. Robinson of Garden City; a daughter, Mrs. Paul (Connie) Gallert of Ionia; one grandchild; and his brother, Roger, of Grand Rapids. Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, with the Rev. Vincent Anderson officiating. Following memorial services family and friends will be received at the family residence. Memorials have been established for St. John’s Episcopal Church, the Ionia County Unit of the American Cancer Society and the Ionia Area Hospice, in care of Leddick Funeral Home or the family.
