Deceased was the eldest daughter of John Knox, who located in Lyons in 1835. Mr. Knox was a distant relative of Gen. Knox of the revolutionary war, and a direct descendent of John Knox, the Scotch reformer. In October 1838, the same year Ionia county was organized, she was married to Adam Roof, who had just been elected the first register of deeds of the county. Mr. Roof occupied many other positions of honor and responsibility, and this family was one of the most prominent in this section of the state. To this union were born six children, of whom five survive; Albert K. Roof of Lyons; Mrs. Addie Hutchinson of this city; Nellie, wife of John Hale of Lyons; Clara, wife of Charles R. Thomas of this city; and Miss Lulu, whose home has been with her mother. Deceased was a fine type of the honored pioneer character, whose sterling traits of character and kindness of heart endeared her to a wide circle of friends. None knew her but to love her, and the memory of her good deeds and loving kindness will long remain precious to the friends with whom she was most closely associated. The funeral service will be held at the late residence at 2 p.m. on Monday. It is probable that Rev. Dr. Thomas of this city will officiate. Another Publication: The Portland Observer, Wednesday, July 30, 1902 Clarisa, widow of the late Adam Roof, died at her home in Lyons on Friday night last, aged 83 years.
