Root was born at Silver Springs, Cumberland County, Pa., June 2, 1835, and died at Ionia June 18, 1913, aged 78 years, 16 days. At the age of five years he with his widowed mother, one brother and two sisters, moved to the state of Vermont; at the age of 17 he come to Kent County, Mich. At the age of 21 he was untied in marriage to Mary L. Smith who died seven years afterward. Later he was again united in marriage to Etta Goodsell, who lived but two years. In 187 he was again married to Sarah A. Shaw of Berlin. To this union were born three children, Mrs. Etta Hoyt of Orleans, who died March, 1904; Dr. Matie Kitson of Osage, Iowa, and Mrs. E. R. Ashby of Ionia, Mich. Brother Root was a soldier in the war of the rebellion serving with the 83rd Pennsylvania volunteers. Soon after returning from the army he was converted and in 1878 entered the work of the ministry. He leaves to mourn their loss his wife, two daughters, six grandchildren, one sister, Mrs. J. H. Liphite of Hart, Mich., and a host of friends. Our loved one he has lift us, And our loss we deeply feel, But ‘tis God who hath bereft us. He can all our sorrows heal. Oh! We miss him, yes we miss him, And our hearts are filled with pain, But we know, for Jesus tells us, That our loss will be his gain. He was kind in disposition And his heart was warm and true, And to know him was to love him And his friends were not a few. Oh! How sad is our bereavement. ‘Twas so hard to see him die And our hearts were almost broken When we had to say ‘good-bye’. Then we shrouded him in raiment, Placed him in his coffin bed And in the cemetery laid him. No, ‘tis but the body, for the spirit lives with God. Where he sleeps among the dead. In peaceful slumber may he rest, In quite peaceful sleep, Until we meet around God’s throne, In Christ to be complete. CARD OF THANKS We wish to express our heartfelt thanks to our neighbors and friends for their kindness and sympathy during the illness and after the death of our beloved husband and father; also for the beautiful floral offerings.
