Lyons Herald, 28 Mar 1901

Died at his home in the township of Lyons on Monday, March 25, James A. Root, 
aged 69 years, 5 months and 8 days.

Deceased was one of our best citizens and by his kindly nature and pleasant 
ways had endeared himself to all with whom he came in contact.  He was born in 
New York state on October 17, 1831, and moved to Lyons township in 1840, 
settling on the farm where he died.  He was united in marriage to Sarah March 
on June 4, 1856, and with whom he lived until his death.  Two sons survive him, 
Jas. E. of Lyons, Mich., and Roy V., of Needles, California.

Mr. Root had held various positions of trust, and at time of his death was a 
director of the farmers’ Mutual Fire Insurance Co. of Ionia county and an 
officer of his school district, in all of which he was ever faithful in the 
discharge of his duties.

The funeral was held Wednesday from the home, being conducted by Rev. M. 
Jewell, of the Methodist church, and was attended by a large circle of 
neighbors and friends who thus paid their last respects to the memory of one 
who had lived among them for so many years, and whose life had been patterned 
after that grand motto, “Do Unto Others as ye would that they should do unto 
you.”  Interment in the Lyons cemetery.

The writer has enjoyed the acquaintance of Mr. Root for the past ten years, and 
has ever found him to be a man above reproach and whose word was as good as his 
bond.  His life’s work was well and faithfully done and in his death the entire 
community suffers a loss.
