D. S. Root, which took place at Ionia, on Thursday evening last. The deceased was born in the State of New York, in 1837, and when 14 years of age came with his parents to Michigan and settled in Ionia county. At the breaking out of the war he enlisted in the original Third Regiment for ninety days. On the re-organization of the regiment he re-enlisted for three years. He went out as an orderly sergeant, and was successively promoted lieutenant, captain, lieutenant colonel and colonel. He was never off duty on account of sickness. He participated in all the great battles and shared in all the hardships with his regiment, and helped to earn that organization the honored place it holds among the commands that gave Michigan the lustrous position is enjoys in the war history of the rebellion. He was twice wounded in battle. At the close of the war he became a resident of this city. Here he studied medicine with Dr. Evans. He attended the medical school in Chicago, from which institution he graduated as one of two honor men of his class and as a reward of merit was appointed to a position in the city hospital. After a time he entered upon the general practice of his profession in Chicago and at the time of his death had secured not only a large patronage, and an honored place in his profession but had amassed considerable fortune. He had been in declining health for sometime and came over to Ionia on Monday, where his father, a brother, and a sister reside, hoping to recuperate by getting away from all business and professional care. He, nor his friends were not seriously alarmed until Thursday last. Physicians were called. But there was no help. He died at fifteen minutes before six in the evening. The Colonel never married. Funeral services occurred Sunday afternoon at the residence of Capt. D. T. Fargo, his brother-in-law, in Ionia, where he died.
