Death was caused by cancer. Mr. Root had been about as usual and had been seriously ill for only about 10 days prior to his death. He was born in Ft. Wayne, Ind. On Sept. 27, 1890, and came to this city when he was 10 years of age. As a boy he took up the baking trade and was employed in local bakeries for many years, having been employed by the late L. E. Trimble, Hearl Punches, Arnold Ditmar and other bakery owners. Last November he gave up the baker’s trade and entered the employ of the Gibson Corporation at Greenville, where he worked until he was forced to give up. Surviving are the widow, formerly Zella Arms, to whom he was married on Sept. 29, 1912, at Ionia; two sons, James of Muskegon and Pvt. Robert Root, serving with the armed forces of the nation; a daughter, Winifred, at home, and one grandson. Also a half-brother, Lorenzo Hill, of Bucyrus, Ohio, and his stepfather, John Hill, of Kalamazoo. Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at the Ellis funeral home with Rev. H. S. Ellis officiating and burial was in the Belding (old) cemetery. Pallbearers were LeRoy Knight, Lewis Lincoln, Arnold Ditmar, Hearl Punches, Kenneth Luce and Peter Shindorf.
