Portland - 

Donald E. Don" Root died peacefully at his home with his wife, family and friends 
surrounding him on June 27, 1999 at the age of 69. 

He was born August 13, 1929 in Lansing, the son of George and Clara (Redman) Root.

Don, along with his wife, Ernie, were owner and operators of "Ernies" Root Cellare 
of Portland from 1973-1992, and owner and operator of D. E. Root Construction for 
over 20 years. He was an avid fisherman and a sprint car racing enthusiast. 

He was preceded in death by two brothers, George and Richard Root.

Surviving are his wife of 42 years, Ernestine Ernie A. ( Smith); special friends, 
Peg Fox, Jim and Veronica Dean and Carrie Dean (fiancee Joe Huhn), all of Portland;

daughter Monica Hart of Lansing; one grandson and one granddaughter.

The Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated Wednesday, June 30 at 12 noon at the 
Gorsline-Rundiman Co. Neller Chapel, Portland with Father Mark Przybysz, of Grand 
Rapids, officiating. 

Interment will follow in Portland Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the Chapel on Monday from 7 till 9 p.m. and 
Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. with Rosary being recited at 8 p.m. 
Tuesday.

Those desiring may make contributions to the Ionia County Hospice in memory of 
Donald Root.
