The Ionia Standard, Friday, October 29, 1915


Sarah A. Shaw was born Sept. 5, 1849 in Columbia, Loraine county, Ohio, and 
died at the home of her daughter, in Osage, Iowa, October 21, 1915.  At an 
early age she came to Michigan with her parents, they settling on a farm in 
the township of Berlin, Ionia county.  

On Christmas day, December 25, 1870 she was united in marriage to Rev. A. J. 
Root, who passed on before, two years ago last June.  To this union were born 
three children, Etta May, the eldest, having preceded her mother to the better 
country 11 years ago.  she leaves to mourn their loss, two daughters, Dr. 
Matie K. Kitson of Osage, Iowa, and Mrs. E. R. Ashby of Ionia, Mich., one 
sister, Mrs. E. E. Sprague, of Elk Rapids, Mich., six grandchildren, other 
relatives, and a host of friends.

In her early married life she was converted and united with the Wesleyan 
Methodist church, of which she was a faithful and consistent member until 
three years ago she, with her husband, united  with the M. E. church of Ionia.

Funeral services were conducted from the home of her daughter, Mrs. E. A. 
Ashby, on Saturday, October 23d, at 1:00 o’clock p.m., Rev. C. E. Hoag of the 
M. E. church officiating.  She was laid to rest beside her husband in the 
beautiful Orleans cemetery to await the call of the resurrection morn.

floral offerings and many acts of kindness shown us during our recent 
bereavement in the death of our mother.
