With one hand missing as the result of a sawmill accident six months ago and one of his four automobile tires blown out, Ernest Rose, 64-year-old farm laborer, died in the front seat of his car sometime Wednesday afternoon. Coroner Harry Myers and Deputy Loval Hodson said Rose had closed his car and used carbon monoxide from the car’s exhaust to commit suicide. The car containing Rose was found running in the farmyard of Charles Pitchford, east of Smokey Row hill, near Ionia. Deputy Hudson said Rose was seen starting his car about 2:00 o’clock Wednesday afternoon, and his body was discovered about 6:00 o’clock. Deputy Hodson said a penny postcard addressed to Leona, Billy and Clara was found in the car. It said: “Good-by Leona and Billy and Clara. I haven’t much to say. I am awfully sorry to do this, but I am no good to work anymore. I love you all.” Officers said Rose had been working as a farm hand and was living in his car for several months. Last winter his hand was caught in a buzz saw and was amputated at the wrist. It had caused considerable pain since, Deputy Hodson said. He had been eating his meals at the Pitchford farm. Officers said they found Rose had bent the exhaust pipe of the car so that it came up through the back seat floorboards, and then had started the motor running. Surviving is the wife, Clara; a son, Billy, and a daughter, Mrs. Leona Helmer, of Rodney. The Roses had not lived together for the past five years. Funeral services will be held Friday morning at 10 o’clock from the Myers funeral home. Rev. George Woolcock of the First Baptist church will officiate and burial will be in Highland Park cemetery.
