L. & N., was killed at Portland Friday eve. He left Ionia on the eastbound freight at 7:40; while switching at Portland, a car was discovered with the drawbar pulled. The car was being “staked” onto a sidetrack, and in two cars coming together he was “pinched.” The best information is to the effect that he was killed at this time, and not by being subsequently run over by cars, though he did fall beside the track and was mutilated. The young man was about 22 years old, a former resident here, and up to about six months ago was “call boy” in the employ of the D.L. & N. at this station. His parents removed to Detroit, where the father is now yard master in the West Detroit yards. The remains passed through here on the afternoon passenger destined to Fenwick, where interment was made on Sunday. The funeral of Edward D. Ross was held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the residence of his uncle, Frank Bennett, of Bushnell. The services were conducted by Rev. Welch, of Fenwick. There was a large attendance, a number from this city being present. The deceased was born July 29, 1876, was a member of the I.O.O.F., highly respected, and will be greatly missed by his former associates and friends. Mr. and Mrs. Ross have the sympathy of their many friends in this city in their sad bereavement.
