Stomach trouble from which he has been a sufferer for years was the cause of death. Mr. Roth has never been able to get relief from his ailment and constantly recurring attacks weakened him so that he could not withstand the last one. He was 86 years of age and leaves besides the widow six children, Paul M., of Pasadena, Calif., Andrew J., of International Falls, Minn., Frank of Owosso, Michael D. of Pasadena, Elizabeth, residing at home and Anna, of Knoxville, Tenn. The funeral will probably be held Wednesday although the time has not been set definitely waiting word from the sons in California. Mr. Roth has been a resident of Ionia for 57 years coming here in 1854. He arrived in this country only the year before so that Ionia has been his home ever since coming from the province of Loraine where he was born in 1825. He was French citizen and served in the French army being stationed most of the time at Paris. During the Civil war here he served as a member of Co. E. Engineers and Mechanics, and was a member of the local G.A.R. post. His life’s profession has been that of tailor and during the first few years of his residence here he worked for different firms. Later he branched out for himself and for many years conducted a tailor shop in different locations. The last place he was in was in the Cornell store on South Third street. For about 12 years Mr. Roth has been unable to work. He has been an esteemed citizen of Ionia and at his death passed one of the living pioneers of the city.
