He was born November 6, 1862, at Langfurt, Germany, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Adam Rothgang. In 1884, he came to the United States and settled in Unionville, Michigan, where he became a miller. His occupation since he was fourteen years old was in the milling business. March 5, 1886, he married Mary Bierlein and they lived in Midland for seven years. The couple later moved to Freeland where they lived for 16 years. After that they moved to Ionia township and have lived there since. For many years he was employed as a miller at Prairie Creek. He was a member of the Midland lodge, No. 273, F.&A.M. for over fifty years. He received his life membership only last year. Surviving are the wife, two sons, Oscar of Ionia township, and Herbert of Marion, Ohio. Also one granddaughter, of Marion, Ohio. Funeral services will be held Sunday, May 18, at 2:30 p.m. from the Stone funeral home on East Washington street. The services will be under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of Ionia. All Masons are to be at the Masonic lodge at 2:00 sharp. Subsequent Publication: Monday, May 19, 1941 Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday from the Stone funeral home on East Washington street for John Rothgang who died at his home in Ionia township Friday morning. Rev. F. G. Dunbar officiated and interment was at Highland Park cemetery. Bearers were Stacey Inman, Erik Sjolander, Frank Johnson, August Winkler, and Garfield Brown of Midland Masonic lodge and Clare Butler of the Ionia Masons. Services at the grave were conducted under the auspices of the Ionia Masonic lodge with Bert Fox officiating. Leo Smith acted as marshal. Members of the Ionia lodge acted as honorary escorts. Among those attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. Hubert Rothgang, LaVerne Rothgang of Marion, Ohio, Mr. and Mrs. Clyde Nelson, Mr. and Mrs. Alijah Adams and Mrs. Rose Anderson of Owosso and Charles Smith of Portland.
