March 24, 1951 Found Dead In Bed Near Ionia Oscar Rothgang, 53, was found dead in his bet at his farm home one mile south of Lower’s garage Friday evening about 78 o’clock by Undersheriff Peter VanVleck. VanVleck answered a request from one of Rothgang’s neighbors, Dale Underwood, that someone have a look at the Rothgang home because no one had seen him since Monday night. Underwood told VanVleck that no lights had been seen at the Rothgang’s for at least two or three nights. When the undersheriff answered the call he had to break the hook off the screen door in order to get into the house. He found Rothgang dead in his bed. He immediately called Coroner Wallace Jackson. Jackson said death was probably due to natural causes. He said the man had died probably Wednesday night or Thursday morning. Evidently Rothgang had been ill for they found several envelopes of medicine near the bed, but there was no doctor’s name on any of the envelopes, Jackson said. If Rothgang died on Thursday he would have died on his 53rd birthday as he was born March 22, 1898. County officials are trying to contact a brother, Herbert who is said to be living in Marion, Ohio.
