The Ionia Standard, Friday, August 13, 1897
Ralph E. Rowe, the two-year-old son of Lewis Rowe, residing in Orange, was 
found drowned in the cistern Friday afternoon.  The little one had been missed 
from the house only two or three minutes, and the first search for him was at 
the barn, but when he was not found there, some one thought of the cistern, 
and sure enough the board covering was found displaced, and the baby was 
discovered in the water.  The pump had been taken out for repairs and a 
temporary covering placed over the opening, weighted down with a stone.  
Either the stone had been carelessly left off or accidentally displaced.
