Smith Rowley was born in the township of Orleans, August 30, 1849, residing 
with his parents until at the age of twenty years.  He was a member of a 
family of five children of which one survives.  July 4th, 1869 he was united 
in marriage to Olive Smith, of Orleans.  To this union was born two children, 
Fred E. of Grand Rapids and Frank O. of Orleans.  He was again united in 
marriage to Florence L. Lyle, of Easton, Ionia County on December 26, 1885.  
To this union was born two children, Bargie L. of Ionia and Orson E., of 
Orleans, his wife preceding him in death about one year ago.  He passed away 
at the home of his son, Frank Rowley, April 1st, 1921, at the age of 71 years 
and 7 months.  Those who are left to mourn their loss are the four children, 
ten grandchildren and one sister, Marriette Hopkins of Grand Rapids.  His 
remains were placed by the side of his wife in the Orleans cemetery.
